My Soil Was Tainted: A First-Time Gardening Fail (and What I Learned)

After years of gardening, this was a first for me—and not a fun one.
I sowed multiple trays of seeds as usual, but nothing germinated. At first, I blamed myself: maybe I forgot to start them, or mislabeled the trays amid the chaos of motherhood. But this time, I knew I’d planted them on schedule, so I dug in to investigate.
What I found was unsettling. Some seeds were still intact but untouched, others looked rotten, and then I spotted a moldy-looking cucumber seed. My seeds were fresh, so that didn’t add up. When I gently squeezed it, a tiny white bug crawled out.
Cue frantic research. It turns out the soil was contaminated—likely with fungus gnat larvae (those little white worms that love moist seed-starting mix and can devour germinating seeds and roots). The culprit? A new bag of bone meal I’d added to the last few trays. I’d used the same soil recipe since January without issues, but this one change introduced the problem. Bone meal can sometimes bring in pests, mold, or excess nutrients that feed fungus and gnats in sterile seedling environments.

I immediately dumped all the affected soil, thoroughly sanitized the trays, and started over with fresh, uncontaminated mix. I’ll be a bit behind on some flowers and veggies this season, but better late than a total crop failure. This was definitely a hard lesson learned!
Has anyone else dealt with something like this—fungus gnats from amendments like bone meal, or contaminated soil killing germination? How did you recover? Did you catch it early enough to save most of your starts, or did it lead to a full wipeout? Share your stories and tips below—I’d love to hear how you bounced back!
